Grapht Works is Imperial College London’s nine-acre industrial space for scale-up companies working in advanced manufacturing, nanotechnology, cleantech, and robotics.
The new, 28-unit site needed a name that captured the manufacturing heritage of North Action (its West London location), while reflecting the innovative, collaborative spirit of companies working on breakthrough technologies.
Working with Pentagram’s brand narrative team, I helped name the new facilities Grapht Works.
The name combines graft — merging new materials to induce growth and strength — and graph, which represents mathematical precision and measured planning.
The word graft is also an informal British word for “hard work” or “effort”, a nod to the area’s industrial history.
Grapht Works speaks to both rigorous effort and the act of joining elements to create stronger hybrids. The name serves as a metaphor for scaling companies combining technologies and market approaches as they transition from research to market-readiness.
