Pentagram - Archtober 2015

This year marks the fifth annual Archtober, the month-long festival celebrating the architecture and design of New York City. Organized by the New York chapter of the American Institute of Architects, the month is full of daily tours, lectures, films, and exhibitions that address the ever-changing landscape of metropolitan architecture. Pentagram has designed the identity and exhibition for Archtober 2015, extending the graphic program developed for Archtober’s previous four editions.

The identity for this year’s festival features a series of tally marks that playfully represents the 31 days of Archtober—each number “5″ is signified by an orange slash to highlight the festival’s fifth edition. The theme extends to a rotated version of the distinctive Archtober frame logo, and a sleek animation sets the new graphics into motion.

The team once again designed the Archtober Lounge at the Center for Architecture in Greenwich Village, continuing the tradition of creating a supergraphic calendar that highlights each day’s events. The calendar is made of collectible cards which feature the Building of the Day, and a corresponding wall map shows the location of each building throughout the city.

This year’s festival introduced the new Archtober Hall, an additional satellite space in the South Street Seaport designed to host public events organized by the festival’s partners. Archtober Hall is part of the recently launched South Street Seaport Culture District initiative, which offers programming by some of the city’s most well-known creative organizations. The new space has eight large exterior windows, and the designers arranged oversized letters to spell “Archtober,” viewable from the outside of the building. The windows also feature the Buildings of the Day arranged in individual window panes. The interior design of Archtober Hall features many of the elements found in the Archtober Lounge, including the bright yellow walls and festival calendar.

The Archtober 2015 identity also included a redesign of the festival website, with an enhanced interactive calendar and a streamlined blog section.
